Dublin Day Tour

Dublin is Europe’s 5th largest city Drive along the River Liffey and view 18 of her 24 bridges. Her Cathedrals date back a thousand years and were home to writers like Johnathan Swift who wrote Gulliver’s Travels.

Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, founded by a well used by Saint Patrick and home to the splendid Huguenot “Ladies” chapel, next door too is Marsh’s library mentioned in James Joyce’s Ulysses and contains the earliest English translation of the Koran. Dublinia and Christ church (built c.1030) will take you back to Viking Dublin and you can enter the biggest Cathedral crypt in Ireland or the UK, which was once used as a nightclub.

Dublin Day Tour

Stop into the Guinness factory and take a photo at the famous James gate. Nearby is Kilmainham hospital home of Ireland’s modern art museum built originally in 1680 for injured and pensioned soldiers, including The Duke of Wellington’s men after the Battle of Waterloo.

Hear the story of Kilmainham Gaol a prison built in 1790 to hold 130 years of Irish revolutionaries. Then across the river Liffey and Collins barracks built 1704 which  is now the National museum of Ireland. Behind it is Arbour hill cemetery where 14 of the executed rebels of 1916 are buried.

A short spin to the Phoenix Park to see the Wellington Monument made with the melted cannons from the Battle of Waterloo, Aras an Uachtarain the president of Ireland’s residence where a candle is alight for the Irish emigrants abroad. Also pass the US Ambassador’s residence a gift by the Irish people in 1922, the Papal Cross to commemorate Pope John Paul’s visit in 1979 and maybe see the 400+ Fallow Deer who roam wild here for the past 300+ years.

Ireland’s Four courts built 1786/02 by James Gandon and Ormond quay named after the Duke of Ormond who created the Phoenix park, then across the Henry Grattan bridge where the old Dublin custom house was replaced in 1852 by what is now the U2 owned hotel(1992). George Frederick Handel first performed “The Messiah” on Fishamble Street in 1742, which leads us to Dame Street and to Dublin castle and City hall.

Trinity College on its 47 acres, home of the Book of Kells and founded by Queen Elizabeth in the late 1592. Access was granted in 1793 to Catholics and in 1904 to women.

Then across O’Connell bridge and up historic O’Connell Street past Daniel O’Connell “The Liberator” & the 4 virtues of Ireland statue. View the GPO the focal point of the 1916 Rising and onto Parnell Square and the Garden of remembrance. Back along the quays we will pass Liberty hall rebuilt in 1961/5 with 16 stories and the statue of James Connolly who died in the 1916 Rising.

The imposing Customs House built 1791 and the Irish Financial Services Centre. View the bronze Famine memorial and board the Jeannie Johnson Famine ship. Crossover the Harp shaped Samuel Beckett Bridge into Grand Canal dock, home of Google and other top IT companies in Ireland. Nearby are the remains of Windmill lane studios where U2 recorded their first albums.

Through Baggot Street, the musical home of Traditional bands including the Dubliners. Into Stephen’s green, the city park which Central park New York was modeled on and the Little museum of Dublin with a great U2 exhibition. Down Dawson Street past the Mansion house home of the Lord Mayor. Finally up Kildare Street and Leinster house, the Irish Parliament and beside it the National Library and History museum.
