Population of approx. 650,000, Belfast was granted city status in 1888 by queen Victoria. The Cavehill mountain which represents the shape of a sleeping giant safeguarding the city, was the inspiration for Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels. Belfast has the Latin motto “Pro tanto quid retribuamus.” This is literally “For (Pro) so much (tanto) what (quid) we shall repay (retribuamus)”

The Cathedral Quarter – St Anne’s Cathedral (Church of Ireland) features a memorial to the Ulster men and women who served and died in World War I. View the beautiful mosaics depicting Saint Patrick, a large modern Celtic cross on the exterior and the Chapel of Unity. A 40-metre stainless steel spire was installed on top of the cathedral, named the “Spire of Hope”, the structure is illuminated at night.

The Gaeltacht Quarter is an area around the Falls Road in west Belfast, which promotes and encourages the use of the Irish language.

19th Century Belfast was the centre for the Irish linen industry (earning it the nickname “Linenopolis”). Nearby the City Hall in Donegall square finished in 1906 and was built to reflect Belfast’s city status. The figures above the door state “Hibernia encouraging and promoting the Commerce and Arts of the City”.

The Queen’s Quarter in south Belfast is named after Queen’s University. It is home to Botanic Gardens and the Ulster Museum.

Albert memorial clock tower was erected in 1865 and is 113ft tall to commemorate Queen Victoria’s consort, Prince Albert. The base of the tower features flying buttresses with heraldic lions and a statue of the Prince in the robes of a Knight of the Garter.

Stormont buildings estate, opened in 1932, this building has served as the seat of Government in Northern Ireland since then. It is now home to the Northern Ireland assembly since 1998 with a suspension between 2002-2007. It consists of the assembly chamber, the senate chamber, civil service offices and public galleries. During WWII the Senate room was the home of RAF command in N.Ireland. Visitors are welcome but all tours are guided only.

The restaurant panels in the Crown Bar were originally made for Britannic, the sister ship of the Titanic also built in Belfast. St George’s Market is a Victorian covered market in Belfast, The main entrance arch displays the Belfast Coat of Arms and the Flag of Ulster red hand on de burgh cross. The Europa Hotel has hosted presidents, prime ministers and celebrities, including President Bill Clinton.
